Above the Line: Practical Movie Reviews- Some Safety Glass Distance (2013) May 11, 2013Writing is in my blood, it makes me feel connected to an often overwhelming sense of disconnectedness. Continue reading →rorydean
- Argo (2012) April 6, 2013So "Argo" should be on your list of movies to watch if you've missed it up to now. Be advised that the thrills come in bite-fulls and the story is much more about an ensemble cast than any one particular player. This has double feature written all over it. Pick up a couple of other movies while you're at it and if all goes South in a hurr […]rorydean

- I Melt With You (2011) March 1, 2013“I Melt With You” feels like the mid-life rights of passage you've heard about or are living, the runway that many men land and take off from. Gathered for many drinks with the best friends of their lives quickly becomes a dangerous Bacchanalia of doomed ritualizing, darkly lit and disturbing yet familiar to anyone who has ever fallen off the beaten pat […]rorydean

The Book of Eli – An Easy Read
From the comfortable distance of our armchairs, ever-so-slightly askew, one might presume to know the tale of The Book of Eli – another installment in the post-apocalypse, nuclear holocaust stricken world of the future where cannibalism, murder, and mayhem live in disharmonious proximity. Yet there is something different about Denzel Washington as the lone wayfarer who defies the elements and would-be marauders on a thirty year march through the desert and the dead that makes me want to like this movie. The Road That Leads Us
The Road is yet another installment in the doom-and-gloom movie franchise, a bleak and tedious wandering film that never settles long enough to establish a connection to the characters, much less the tissue-thin storyline. I’ve had my fill of post apocalyptic movies and The Road reinforces my sense of saturation of a genre that’s worn out its welcome. Continue reading
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus – Another Gilliam Stumble?
I convinced myself with bejeweled recollections of Gilliam’s previous films that he would deliver, if for no other reason than youthful hopefulness, but alas, no. Continue reading
Toy Story 3 from past to present
Toy Story 3 delivers in customary Pixar fashion, a character centric story based tale with familiar themes and familiar archetypes. There is so little to criticize that it seems insignificant to mention. This is a must see for fans of the franchise and newbies alike – though it seems improbable that all but new-borns have missed one of Pixar’s eleven films since 1995. Continue reading

Josh Brolin – His Father’s Son
The similarities between Josh Brolin and his father, veteran television actor James Brolin are uncanny. Solid character actors equally adept at starring roles, the Brolins have carved a special place in television and films across a broad range of genres. Continue reading
