Magnolia (1999) (via Merchbot’s Movie Reviews)

Magnolia is a film that clearly stands out as one of the best from the late 90′s and serves to remind us that Paul Thomas Anderson is a filmmaker of merit and someone who will continue to deliver memorable films. It’s a pleasure to see his work in Magnolia, to watch him stretching and coming into his own which would ultimately lay the groundwork for Punch Drunk Love (2002) and There Will Be Blood (2003). My Life Without Me reminds us about love and loss, the seemingly banal drudgery of day to day life that can easily be detoured if not derailed by things completely out of our control. The Good Heart

All in all, The Good Heart wasn’t the worst film I’ve seen lately but it will most likely fade from memory soon enough. There are moments in The Good Heart that border on believable but heavy, sentimental direction prevents a meaningful film from shedding the baggage of inexperience and the gloomy, contrived story falls flat. James R. Wilkinson – Edge of Chaos
