The 2011 Academy Awards – Who Gets The Gold And Why

I think it is relatively straight forward as to who will be taking home an Oscar this year. In some cases there will be multiple Oscars, others no Oscars at all for our favorite films and filmmakers. In many of the categories, the choices can quickly be whittled away by removing the least likely candidates from the list. While this seems like an odd proposition, one must consider the countless decisions that go into the nomination process and consequently things we never hear about. We want to believe the award is based on merit and talent alone but we know other factors weigh in as well and it would be impossible to deny that personal agendas and preferential treatment finds a way to the ballot box. True Grit (2010) The Real Deal

By all definition, True Grit (2010) is entertaining as well as rewarding and perhaps the most traditional film in the repertoire of the Coen’s. The characters are to the point and the dialog sharp, engaging, and poetic. It is easy to see their progression from No Country For Old Men (2007), a sort of modern day western about good guys and bad guys and justice. True Grit affords the brothers a chance to explore the gradation of character in more readily available personages, people you might know or in the least relate to without losing specificity and substance. If this film is a demarcation for the Coen brothers, a decisive interest in characters not so unlike us, it will prove to broaden their already significant and rightful presence among the best filmmakers of the past quarter century. Crazy Heart is the story of an aging, broken dreamer who is forced to change his ways and in doing so reminds us of ourselves. This is not a story about greatness but a story about one man with a guitar coming from some place honest.
