George Clooney writes, directs and stars in this fine and impressive ensemble of talent with some of the brightest stars in front of the camera and behind it. Ides Of March is well made and character driven and for the most part the film accomplishes its goal of poking the seething underbelly of political corruption with impressive results from a fine ensemble cast with George Clooney at the reins. Jack Goes Boating (2010)

At the core of the story are the archetypical struggles of love, friendship, and mistakes all pulling and pulling as if a rhythm that has no beginning or end but in perpetuity like breath and heartbeats that must be transferred between the sick and the old, the living and the dying. Friends sometimes remind you how alone you feel most of the time, especially when your dreams are no more realizable than theirs. New York looms, it is cold and distant, an anonymity that is both rewarding and relentlessly vacuous. Continue reading

Magnolia (1999) (via Merchbot’s Movie Reviews)

Magnolia is a film that clearly stands out as one of the best from the late 90′s and serves to remind us that Paul Thomas Anderson is a filmmaker of merit and someone who will continue to deliver memorable films. It’s a pleasure to see his work in Magnolia, to watch him stretching and coming into his own which would ultimately lay the groundwork for Punch Drunk Love (2002) and There Will Be Blood (2003).
